Product Description |
| Whether you commute to work or school on the freeway, drive for a living, or just like to go on an occasional recreational trip, the Whistler DE-1788 Wireless Battery-Powered Radar/Laser Detector is an invaluable addition to your motor vehicle. Designed with an internal battery pack and equipped with four rechargeable nickel metal hydride (NiMH) AA batteries, the DE-1788 gives you the option of packing away the power cord included with purchase so that you can go wireless. The DE-1788 gives you 360-degree protection from a full range of detection signals, including X, K, Ka, and safety band radar, as well as laser and VG-2 detector detection. In addition, the DE-1788 is specially equipped to detect the rapid bursts of POP mode radar, which last less that 1/15 of a second and are undetectable by non-POP-equipped detectors. Lightweight and compact, the DE-1788 comes with a windshield mount to let you position your detector for easy visual access to the blue-background LCD text display. And to limit false alerts, the DE-1788 gives you a choice of three different detection modes, letting you avoid the annoyance of repeated automatic door opener and burglar alarm warnings when you're driving in the city, but letting you know if signal strength becomes strong. So with the Whistler DE-1788 Radar/Laser Detector in your car or truck, you'll be prepared for just about anything when you're behind the wheel. Note: Radar detectors can be used without restriction in well over 40 states, but restrictions apply in a few states. Please check with your state department of motor vehicles or highway patrol if you have questions about whether there are restrictions in your area. What's in the Box DE-1788 radar detector, windshield bracket, straight power cord, 4 AA NiMH rechargeable batteries, home plug-in battery charger, and owner's manual. |

Battery Powered Whistler Review

| I am very pleased with my portable radar detector. I love the option to transfer from one car to another, and the battery life is pretty good; best to bring it inside when it's really cold though. After doing research on all the available units, I'm very pleased with my purchase! And the price was well below the competition! |
Not broken...yet

Concerning the complaints about the fragility of the internal clip, so far, after 6 months of near-daily use of the Whistler DE-1788, the clip on my device is holding strong. Every time I'm finished using the radar detector I unlatch it from the window bracket and place it in the middle storage box so it doesn't get nicked. So, I am heavily using the 1788 and it still hasn't broke...knock on whatever.
The product itself works reliably. Although the sound may not be as loud as you desire, the blue display brightens up when a radar is detected and usually catches my attention from the corner of my eye, even if I'm jammin' too loud. I also enjoy the available options/features in its menu, including city modes, auto shut-off, rearrangement of sounds for different radar detections, among others. |
Surprisingly good performance from a cordless model

| I've been using a Valentine One for years, but my newly acquired vintage sports car does not support a power source, so I had to go with a cordless model. Since this appears to be the only one that doesn't "go to sleep" while turned on, I was attracted to what promised to be better performance than the typical cordless detector. I've been surprised by how good the performance has been. It's no V1, but it's a very good detector, and the cordless convenience is great. It runs for a couple weeks between chargings. I wish the alerts were louder, as I'm using it in a convertible, but I can still hear it go off. Highly recommended, especially at this price point. |
fight the power!

It is a bit large and defintely on the heavy side as far as radar detectors go, but I really hate having a cord hanging in front of me. Works like a charm and if the batterys go out you can plug it in and charge them as you drive.
Came with 4aa batteries and a charger, and a power cord. What a deal! |
Early review--addendum

This is my first radar detector. It does what I want it to do when I want it to do it. It picks up police radar and static radar trailers easily from a distance. The detector did not sound off when I passed through the new laser radar, but I may not have been hit by the beam.
It is one quick move to take the unit off the mount and to put it back on. The latch inside the detector that holds it to the mount will wear out fast. Velcro a piece of thick foam rubber under the front of the detector to support it on the dash. It is easy to recharge the batteries in the unit while you drive. The Highway and City modes allow me to filter out false alarms. I like the snooze detector for long trips. The display is easy to see unless you have a light colored dash that reflects light during the day. Put a black piece of felt on the dash in front of the detector.
I do not have any other detectors to compare side by side for an accuracy competition, but this one does the job that I need it to do. The control buttons are fast and easy to use while driving. It does not pick up radar from the sides, but this should lower false alarms and I usually do not speed in a sideways direction.
You may only have a second or two to react when going head on with a patrol car using mobile radar because your combined speeds are about 140 mph. |
